SECOND ANNUAL ‘SCRUBBED INTO FASHION’ SHOW TO BENEFIT SMILE NETWORK
Students Turn Medical Scrubs into Couture Creations in a Project Runway-style Competition Hosted by Christopher Straub and FOX 9’s Todd Walker
MINNEAPOLIS (April 3, 2012) – For the second year, University of Minnesota -Twin Cities students and aspiring designers will have a unique opportunity to compete in a “Project Runway”-esque fashion show called “Scrubbed Into Fashion” to raise funds for Smile Network, a non-profit humanitarian organization that funds life-altering reconstructive surgeries to children who would otherwise go untreated.
The University of Minnesota Medical School Student Council, Dental School Student Council, Medical Alumni Society and the FAB: Fashion and Business student group have partnered up to present “Scrubbed Into Fashion — Africa,” a competition which students must create African-themed runway fashions out of medical scrubs. The show will be hosted by Christopher Straub and FOX 9’s Todd Walker. Straub is a Twin Cities-based fashion designer who made his debut on season 6 of Lifetime’s “Project Runway.”
The students’ designs will be judged by a panel of local celebrities: David Wagner of JUUT, Alexis Walsko of Lola Red PR and Shop Talk, and Allison Kaplan of Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine.
More 500 people attended last year’s event, which raised more than $10,000 for the organization.
“Last year’s event was a great success, so we’re thrilled to be working again with this group of very passionate and innovative students,” said Kim Valentini, founder of Smile Network. “We have been so impressed with their creative energy and their sincere desire to raise money to provide medical missions through Smile Network; they will truly be changing the lives of children around the world through this event.”
