With the end of House, FOX needed to a new medical prime-time TV drama. Enter The Mob Doctor. The series, which premiered on September 17, 2012, follows Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro), a surgical resident in Chicago who juggles her hospital duties including cute fellow doctor boyfriend (Friday night Lights‘ Zach Gilford) with protecting her brother (Jesse Lee Soffer) from the Mob. In order to pay back her debt, Grace has to help anyone they demand. Moral of the story.. be careful who you owe!
That sometimes means helping criminals, not asking questions or going against her Hippocratic oath, as with the mafia saving lives isn’t her only concern anymore. I love that this show highlights more of a dark and against the law plot for doctors. This interesting twist on a medical drama is really refreshing from the typically love story drama within the hospital.
As if being a surgical resident isn’t time consuming on it’s own, Grace is constantly bouncing between hospital sanctioned surgeries and stitching up or operating on run-of-the-mill crime related injuries. That’s a lot of time in scrubs, if you ask me!
My favorite aspect of the show? Grace works closely with her good friend and nurse, Rosa ‘Ro’ Quintero (Floriana Lima). This is the first time I’ve really seen doctors and nurses inter-mingling in such a positive way. Many medical shows feature only one field in the hospital, but I love Grace and Ro’s relationship. They depend, lean and learn from each other. This seems a lot more realistic then others TV shows portrayal of that doctor-nurse relationship.
After only just a few episodes being aired, I already know I like this new series. OK, so it might not or ever become an award-winning show, but it’s got a nice plot filled with mafia problems mixed with medical cases standing on solid acting. Yet, the show hasn’t taken off yet in the ratings department. But don’t let that deter you from watching, I highly encourage you to check out The Mob Doctor Mondays at 9pm on FOX.
